The Well of life is a masterpiece, located in front of the impressive building of the Croatian National Theatre, whose author is the famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. The work was created at the beginning of the 20th century, and in 1912 it was placed at today’s location.
Many experts and scholars claim that Mestrovic has never exceeded his creative power and visual quality as he achieved with the Well of life during his lifetime. Bodies, made proportional, look alive, realistic, as if they were frozen in the move.
The Well is a regular geometric figure, a simple cylinder, without any details, with its simplicity calms the composition of the whole work. Due to its smooth and rounded bodies there is no strong light contrast and the transitions between light and shadow are very soft.
